The Leisure Site, Land between A102 (M) and Bugsby’s Way, Greenwich Peninsula, SE10 TQ 39625 78725 MoLAS (Heather Knight) evaluation June 1999 Parkridge Developments BBW99

A total of fourteen test pits were excavated within the footprint of the proposed building. Each test pit was excavated to a depth of c6.00m. Although no artefacts were found, the evaluation provided information about the environment during the prehistoric period.

The evaluation revealed an alluvial sequence of River Terrace Gravels overlain by a sandy clay (at 0.8mOD) which was overlain by a layer of peat. This peat either belongs to the Tilbury III or Tilbury IV deposits dating to either the Neolithic or the Bronze Ages. Overlying the peat was a layer of stiff brownish grey clay which was overlain by the modern make-up layer.
