Former Dreadnought Seaman's Hospital, King William Walk SE10 TQ 3845 7729 MoLAS (Julian Bowsher) watching brief February - July 1999 Dannatt, Johnson Architects, on behalf of the University of Greenwich DSH98

This extensive watching brief covered structural alterations as well as associated groundworks during the refurbishment of the building. Natural gravels were revealed only on the north side, at an average of 3.00m OD. The stratigraphy largely consisted of landfills but structural remains were found to the north-west of what might have been Henry VIII’s "Great Barne". To the south-east were more substantial remains of the 17th century, almost certainly relating to tenements and a school known to have been there. Two cast iron settling tanks of the late 19th century were also found.
