Service trenches, east entrance of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich SE10 TQ 3880 7772 MoLAS (Julian Bowsher) watching brief March 1999 National Maritime Museum NMT96 (5th WB under this code)

Two service trenches were examined for archaeological remains. A number of early walls were revealed including what was probably the northern retaining wall of the old Deptford to Woolwich roadway. Other walls were of 17th, 18th and 19th century date. The foundations of the East Wing were also recorded.

The natural sand (truncated Blackheath Beds observed at 40.84mOD) was cut by two undated (?post medieval) pits, and brick walls, a well, and rectangular "bin" of ?early 18th century date.
