After exploratory test pits were excavated two years ago, (ref) 58 pits were excavated in order to relay completely new domestic and hydrant water pipes throughout the site. Most of these trenches were small and disturbed but a number of features were recorded. Traces of natural sands were found to the south-west and the overlying sands in a number of other southern trenches. A wall foundation uncovered just west of the King Charles Quarter may have been part of the late 15th century Friary and surfaces to the south-east may have been connected with the northern end of the tiltyard. Other trenches revealed a number of wall and surface fragments from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as 18th century levelling deposits and foundations of the present buildings. A large 19th century drain / tunnel was revealed near the west gate.
